After years of claiming the tech will end up dooming humanity, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has officially joined the race to develop artificial intelligence (AI) with the launch of a new company called xAI.
The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX and owner of Twitter announced on Wednesday, July 12, that the new AI company’s goal will be to “understand the true nature of the universe.” Musk and his new development team are expected to provide more details in the coming weeks. What is known is that the team behind xAI will be led by Musk and staffed by executives who have worked at a variety of different tech companies, many of whom have had previous experience working on artificial intelligence. These companies and AI developers include DeepMind’s AlphaCode, OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 chatbots. Several other executives also have a history working on other leading chatbots like Google’s Bard and Anthropic’s Claude.
Previous reports also note that Musk has already secured several thousand GPU processors from tech manufacturer Nvidia, presumably to power a potential large language model.
This report came out around the same time when Musk initially shared details of his own plan for a new AI-powered chatbot to rival ChatGPT called “TruthGPT” amid fears that existing AI being developed is prioritizing creating “politically correct” systems rather than actually developing the technology.
Musk reportedly incorporated xAI in Nevada back in March, with initial filings listing the company as a former subsidiary of X Corp., the new parent company of Twitter, and a statement on the new AI company’s website claiming that while it will be separate from X Corp it will still “work closely with X [Twitter], Tesla and other companies to make progress towards our mission.”
The creation of this new AI company flies in the face of all of Musk’s previous statements regarding the development of AI.
Musk previously warned tech giants to put a pause of at least six months, if not more, on the “dangerous race” to develop AI. He warned of its “catastrophic” effects and its “profound risk to society and humanity.” The pause would include some time to research risk assessments of AI development.
Apparently, Musk was just trying to buy time before joining the AI race.
The xAI website notes that the company has enlisted the services of Dan Hendrycks as a consultant. Hendrycks is the director of the Center for AI Safety, a nonprofit that works to warn people about what it sees as the existential dangers associated with the rapid and unfettered development of AI.
Hendrycks’ organization earlier this year released a letter cautioning companies about the development of AI, warning that Big Tech leaders have a duty to aid in “mitigating the risk of extinction from AI,” which Hendrycks said “should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war.”
